Cable and Satellite TVOutdoors playing kickball after school, or running to the corner store to pickup a few cents worth of candy. Sound like a familiar after school activity when you were growing up? It's not so any longer, more and more kids are being thrown in front of cable and satellite TV for entertainment. Playing outdoors used to be the fun thing to do, but with the onset of technological entertainment those days seem so long ago.For those parents and individuals who agree with these points of view they are the ones that need to band together and express their concern for what cable and satellite TV are doing to our youth today. Can watching cable of satellite TV hurt our brains? When a person sits in front of their television for a long period of time their brain becomes in-active. There isn't a real mental challenge to watch your favorite sitcom, or the sports highlights from that night. When our brains become in-active for prolonged periods of time brain cells can be destroyed. This is not to say that TV is causing this directly, it's more of an indirect results. There should be more educational programming that entices the viewers to think, and process information they watch. Does cable and satellite TV cause obesity? Of course Cable and satellite TV doesn't cause obesity directly. The problem we're having today with obesity in adults and youth can somewhat be traced back to what we do when watching this hours of cable and satellite TV. The snacks that are consumed during TV or movie watching combined with the lack of activity equals weight gain for most of us. Especially in youth, snacking and lack of exercise will eventually slow a child's metabolism. Can cable and satellite TV corrupt? Cable and Satellite TV is a huge influencer in todays pop culture. With MTV displaying videos of women wearing skimpy clothing, and rap videos depicting that violence and drugs are ok it can very easily corrupt todays youth. The image that doing drugs is cool, or a women needs to be almost anorexic to be attractive is putting the wrong images in our minds. Remember this isn't reality it's TV. Before sitting down to an evening of sitcoms or movies, consider what value the content brings you, and what you're going to be snacking on. If you're going to be watching cable and satellite tv, consider health snack alternatives. Also for our children consider getting a V-chip in your TV, and keeping a close eye on the programming they're watching it can go a long way in the long run. |
